Parking deck to get new LED lighting

ASHTABULA — It will take $53,655 to fix up the city’s 38-year-old parking garage off East 46th Street, which is plagued by poor lighting, City Manager Jim Timonere said.

The number includes 40 LED lights in the basement, first- and second-floors of the parking deck, as well as spot lights at the entrance, he said.

City Council approved an ordinance Monday night authorizing the city manager to enter into a contract with B & J Electric of Poland, Ohio to install the lighting for an amount not to exceed $43,655, according to the contract.

Council approved a second ordinance to appropriate an additional $10,000 from the unappropriated parking deck fund to cover the remaining cost of installation, according to the contract.

Timonere said the parking deck is used more than most people may think — about 75 to 100 vehicles are parked in the garage every weekday.

“All of Head Start parks there,” he said.

Several years ago, city officials talked of selling the parking deck to Ashtabula County Medical Center for additional parking, but that deal never went anywhere.

“It costs just as much to move as it does to maintain,” Timonere said.

In other business:

n City Council authorized the city manager to enter into an agreement with Medico Systems, Inc. for the purpose of asbestos abatement and demolition of three houses for an amount not to exceed $38,325. This expenditure will be taken out of a Community Development Block Grant.

n City Council approved a one-year agreement with Morton Salt of Chicago as the sole bidder in the amount of $33.85 per ton for salting snow- and ice-covered streets for 2014.

“This is less than the state bid,” Timonere said. “We set aside $125,000 for salt for next year.”

n Ward 2 Councilman August Pugliese asked residents to sweep away fallen leaves from storm sewers to avoid plugging up the system.

n City Council plan to meet at 9 a.m. Nov. 14 to discuss the proposed 2014 budget.
