Geneva pavilion gets landscape face lift

GENEVA — Jack Hopkins loves the new community pavilion in the heart of downtown Geneva.

“But there were a bunch of us at the Geneva Rotary who really pushed to get landscaping in at the pavilion. But the project had stalled out, unfortunately,” he said.

The thought of the city’s new pavilion looking so barren during the Geneva Grape JAMboree was too much for a small group of Rotarians and citizens to think about. They grabbed some shovels and got to work.

Hopkins, his fellow Rotary members and a few members of the Ashtabula County Young Marines braved a late summer heat wave to plant perennials, shrubbery and evergreen trees at the pavilion last week.

“We were very careful to only plant items that are easy to care for,” Hopkins said. “We want the pavilion to look nice, but we don’t want to create a full-time job for anyone,” he said.

The plants were donated by the Geneva Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) and the effort was pushed by Geneva Fire Chief Doug Starkey.

“Doug really wanted this done before the JAMboree,” Hopkins said, “and we couldn’t agree more.”

Hopkins said all the hard work was worth the effort, and he would like to thank the young Marines for helping with the project.

The pavilion, which was recently completed, is a project supported by the Geneva Rotary. The open-air shelter has been used all summer for summer concerts and community events. The pavilion was paid for by the Geneva Rotary with support from the CIC. Ownership of the pavilion was then transferred to the City of Geneva.

“We see this pavilion as a real asset to the city,” Hopkins said. “It is a wonderful project for the citizens of this community.”
