No charges filed yet in Ashtabula crash that injured 5 people

ASHTABULA — No charges have been filed in the Aug. 31 crash that injured five people when their car went over the side of a cliff, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Friday.

OHP received a report of a crash on Walnut Boulevard near Union Avenue at about 3:05 a.m. Aug. 31, reports show.

Tyler Ashley, 26, was driving a Honda Civic north on Union Avenue when he failed to yield at a stop sign, drove through someone's yard and over the cliff.

The car landed on a private Lake Erie beach very close to the water’s edge, according to witnesses. At least one of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle and thrown into the water.

The passengers were Katrina Welton, 22, of Ashtabula; Benjamin Ashcroft, 22 of North Kingsville; Shawn Ryder, 25 of Ashtabula and Brandyn Frampton 21, of Kingsville Township, according to an OHP news release.

Ashtabula police and firefighters responded to the scene.

All five passengers were injured, three of them seriously. They were taken to the Ashtabula County Medical Center for treatment.

One passenger remains hospitalized, according to OHP reports.

The OHP is handling the crash investigation because of their expertise in conducting major traffic crash investigations, Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said.

OHP continues to investigate the accident.
