Ashtabula residents witness law enforcement training

ASHTABULA — Neighbors peeking out the windows of their Stark Avenue homes awoke Monday morning to find more than two dozen law enforcement officers dashing into a home.

After a short period of time neighbors figured out the event was a training exercise and went back to their business, or stopped to watch for awhile.

The Violent Fugitive Task Force Northern Ohio, coordinated by Deputy U.S. Marshall Bill Boldin, conducted one of their regular training sessions needed to prepare for arresting violent criminals.

“We train a minimum of every three months,” Boldin said while taking a break from the training exercise.

The force gets its members from Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties with a few federal representatives added to the mix.

“We have 28 of the 30 (team members that) made it out here today.” Boldin said.

He said the house was recently vacated and the owner offered it as a training site.

Officers took turns entering the home creating situations that could arise during the arrest of a potentially violent criminal.

Boldin said he interacted with area residents that came outside to see what was happening. “The community support has been super,” he said of area residents since the unit kicked into full gear back in February.

Boldin said there has been a loose cooperation with the unit prior to this year but the relationship became more specific in February.

“Every major department in the county is represented,” Boldin said.

“Since we’ve been here in Ashtabula County we have made about 25 arrests,” Boldin said. He said the unit only makes arrests and will pass along other evidence if found during an arrest at a particular property.
