Fire damages Rome Township home

ROME TOWNSHIP — A Day Road home received significant smoke damage late Thursday afternoon, said Rome Township Fire Chief Ed Koziol.

Koziol said a neighbor was driving by 5179 Day Road when he saw smoke coming from the building. He said the man tried to put the fire out but the fire department was called and was able to contain the blaze with about 500 gallons of water.

“A lot of heat and smoke damage. The fire was contained (to the kitchen area),” Koziol said.

He said firefighters came from Andover, Jefferson, Dorset, Rome and Hartsgrove fire departments. “There isn’t much water out there,” he said.

Koziol said the owner, Shannon Baker, would not be able to stay at the home but the house can be rebuilt. He said there was structural damage to the kitchen area and significant smoke damage to the whole house.

He said the owner said the house was built in the 1880s.
