Hundreds of middle school-aged students from three counties will be coming to Conneaut on Saturday for the District V Solo and Ensemble, officials said.
An estimated 400 musicians from 13 schools will spend the day at Conneaut High School to have their performances evaluated by six judges, said Megan Kalosky, choral music director for Conneaut Area City Schools.
The event marks the first time Conneaut has hosted the event, which will evaluate students from Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning counties, Kalosky said. Depending on their age, students in seventh- and eighth-grades — along with some ninth-graders — will be showcased, she said.
Kalosky and Sean Smith, band director at CHS and Conneaut Middle School, began planning the event many months ago, said Dawn Zappitelli, CHS principal.
The event is less a competition than an opportunity for students to get some constructive criticism from experts, Kalosky said. “It will help students in their musical education,” she said.
Ashtabula County school districts to be represented include Conneaut, Grand Valley, Jefferson, Ashtabula and Buckeye.
