Mytikas Spa and Wellness coming to Jefferson Community Center

JEFFERSON — Cammie Brown always knew she was destined to take care of people.

She thought about pursuing a career in nursing, but didn’t feel it would be the right fit for her.

“I knew since I was little that I wanted to help people, I just didn’t know what I wanted to do,” she said.

Brown’s mother had a friend who was a massage therapist and always talked about how rewarding it was when she helped her clients. It was at that point that Brown knew that was what she wanted to do.

Brown wanted to be able to develop a relationship with the people she was helping and she knew massage therapy was just the way to do it.

After studying for two years at Hocking College, Brown completed her certificate in massage therapy and she is just a few months away from completing her associate’s degree in massage and spa therapy.

While she is completing her final course in the degree program, she is ready to put her skills to work and will begin doing so at the Jefferson Community Recreation Center where she will open Mytikas Spa and Wellness.

The spa will open with a grand opening celebration April 26 and 27. Brown will be offering free five minute massages to new customers and tea and crackers will be served.

Clients can expect a very tranquil experience. Soothing music plays in the room to encourage immediate relaxation.

“People can expect to be put in an automatic peaceful setting,” Brown said. “It is like a little mini getaway.”

Beginning the first weekend in May, following the grand opening, Mytikas Spa and Wellness will assume regular hours of Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. As her clientele increases, Brown will eventually be open during the week as well, she said.

Initially, Brown will only offer relaxation massages until her degree is completed. Eventually, she will be offering spa treatments including hot stone massage, therapeutic massage, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and aroma therapy.

A 50 minute full-body massage is $45, a 30 minute full-body massage is $30 and a 10 minute spot treatment is just $10.

Brown said she is excited to get started on this new endeavor.

“It’s scary but exciting,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting people and helping them feel better.”

Brown said she also studied a lot about the different pathologies while in school. She is hoping that will encourage the seniors to give massage a try.

“It can be helpful to seniors,” she said. “I want to show them I can help work on their issues.”

Brown is no stranger to the community or to the Jefferson Senior Center. She is from Hartsgrove and did a lot of volunteering at the senior center before leaving for college. Brown is hoping being located in the community center will help her attract a wide range of people.

“That’s what is so great about the community center,” she said.

Brown said she is hoping her prices and extensive schooling will encourage people to give her a try rather than traveling to Lake or Cuyahoga counties for treatments at a larger spa.

“My prices are a lot less than larger spas and I offer a small home-like environment,” she said. “I have been schooled for two years and have a degree coming soon.”

Brown said some larger spas only require their massage therapists to complete a six month certificate program.

Allison Brown, community center director, said she is excited about the new addition to the center.

“I’m hoping moms will drop their kids off at preschool and spend an hour in the spa to relax, or those who work in the community can come in for a half hour on their lunch break,” she said. “We’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback.”

The name Mytikas comes from the highest point on Mt. Olympus. Brown is hoping her therapy will encourage her clients to treat themselves like Greek gods and goddesses.

To schedule an appointment with Brown, call the community center.
