Ashtabula BOE lowers cost of student activity fees

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — High School and junior high school students in the Ashtabula Area City School District who participate in band, or who play sports, will pay less money to do so, starting in August.

The school board unanimously approved the revision of student activity fees, including band, at Wednesday night’s meeting at Lakeside High School.

The activity fees will change to $200 per student at Lakeside High, and $100 per student at Lakeside Junior High, according to the new plan.

The change, part of Superintendent Patrick Colucci’s 2014-2015 expenditure reduction plan, puts a cap on the cost per year, per student.

In comparison, high school students now pay $250 per athletic activity, and junior high students pay $125. This plan was adopted in 2010.

Ashtabula parent, Susan Keasling, said the new, lower, capped fee is going to make a big difference in her household budget.

“To a parent like me, whose daughter plays three sports and band, my 2014-2015 savings will be $550 a year,” she said. “This (school) year, I paid $250 for soccer, $250 for basketball, $250 for softball, and then zero for band.”

Next school year, Keasling will only pay $200 for soccer.

Colucci said he worked hard to restructure the activity fee because it was something he felt strongly about doing.

Keasling said this is “positive news for Lakeside” and she’s pleased with it.
