Lights on the Lake coming to Lake Shore Park Nov. 29

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — It won’t be long now and thousands of twinkling, colorful lights will delight visitors to Lake Shore Park every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Strings of lights decorate the park’s trees and hills and glow on a train, toys, elves, snowmen, penguins, poinsettias, a Christmas tree, Santa Claus, candy canes and more.

Ashtabula County’s Lights on the Lake drive-through light display will open for the season Nov. 29 and will continue to glow from 6 to 9 p.m. every weekend through the end of the year.

“We have a redesigned layout and have upgraded many displays,” said Rick Coblitz, president of the Lights on the Lake Committee. “For example, the skaters now have a pond.”

Also new this year are 6,000 more LED light changes, he said.

The committee also had some new helpers setting up the displays — Ron McVoy of Broad Street Electric and Ashta Chemicals, Coblitz said.

Many displays were made specifically for Ashtabula: a flying saucer gas station, a lift bridge, a covered bridge, a lighthouse and a fishing boat.

Cost is $5 per carload.

Coblitz suggests motorists enter the park slowly to enjoy the 12 Days of Christmas murals painted by local artist John Torma, which are illuminated by spotlights.

Santa Claus will stop by and greet the children with a candy cane.

The Nativity scene is always a favorite light display, but last year, many people said they liked the waterfalls by the park’s rock garden, committee members said.

For folks who like to ride instead of drive through Lights on the Lake, there’s the Jolly Trolley, a charter bus and Sackett’s horse-drawn wagon rides available. For more information, the trolley phone number is (440) 992-8600, the bus, (440) 964-0202, and for a wagon ride, call (440) 964-2696.
