Buckeye Boo will get you in the Halloween mood

NORTH KINGSVILLE — Screams, crashes and bangs, strobe lights  and an array of unsavory characters are just a small part of this year’s Buckeye Boo.

The old North Kingsville Elementary school building has been transformed for the third year in a row, from abandoned school to maze of nightmarish horrors.

“It’s been pretty well received,” said Buckeye Boo Vice President  Chip Laugen. “It’s a good fundraiser for the band. We usually average about 5,000 people for each run.”

The Buckeye Boo is being held Oct. 18-20, 25-27, 31, and Nov. 1-2. On Fridays and Saturdays it is open 7 to 11 p.m., Sundays from 7 to 10 p.m., and 7 to 10 p.m. on Halloween.

Laugen said they are unsure of where the fundraiser will be held next year, as the school building is up for sale. Buckeye Boo is put on by the Buckeye Music Boosters.

“We get a lot of help from the band students and their parents. And the students get volunteer hours,” Laugen said. “We get donations from different businesses in the community to buy supplies.”

Buckeye’s head band director Connie Sommers said, “We just really appreciate all of the community support. We wouldn’t have been able to do this without all of the support.”

Admission is $5, and re-admission for the same night is $3 with a hand stamp. Laugen’s wife, Linda, said, “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s still only $5. Where else can a family of four have a fun night out for $20?!”

“It’s a lot of fun to scare people,” Laugen said. The haunted house is not recommended for children under age 10, pregnant women  and people with heart conditions.

The Buckeye Boo has a long-standing history, Laugen said. “In the early to mid 70’s it was held at various locations throughout the community. They would choose different old houses and keep them a secret until a week before it opened.”
