Commissioners award bid for ACDJFS expansion project

JEFFERSON — A Brookfield firm will head up construction of the Ashtabula County Department of Job and Family Services facility expansion project.

At the recommendation of Smolen Engineering, Ashtabula County commissioners awarded the bid to Vendrick Construction Inc., in their regular session Thursday afternoon.

Vendrick came in with the lowest bid at $1,227,000, which includes two alternate bids for various parking lots and a small building addition.

The county received five bids for the general construction portion of the project.

Three firms also submitted bids for the roofing portion of the project. Commissioners awarded the contract to Warren Roofing and Insulating Co., of Walton Hills.

Warren Roofing came in with the lowest bid at $459,900.

This is the second time the project had gone out for bid. The first round of bids all came back 10 percent higher than the Ashtabula County engineer’s estimated project cost of $1.8 million.

The expansion will consolidate most of ACDJFS’s services into one location.

The project will include an addition to the existing facility at the Donahoe Center, which is shaped like an “H,” that will fill in the courtyard areas on both sides of the building, plus extend the building to the east.

The Lake Avenue JobSource services will be relocated to ACDJFS’s Main Avenue building, which is owned by the county, and all operations from the Main Avenue building would be moved to the Donahoe Center. The Lake Avenue location is rented and will save the department about $100,000 a year, which ACDJFS Executive Director Patrick Arcaro hopes to put back into staffing.
