Two-year highway project coming to an end in Conneaut

CONNEAUT — The end is very near for the Ohio Department of Transportation’s $44.6 million Interstate 90 repair project in Conneaut — but just a few more traffic obstructions remain.

Beginning today and continuing through Oct. 5, entrance and exit ramps connecting Route 7 to the freeway will be closed briefly but repeatedly for resurfacing work, ODOT announced Wednesday.

Here’s the schedule, as outlined by ODOT:

• Starting today, the entrance and exit ramps at the I-90 eastbound/Route 7 interchange will be closed for one- to two-hour intervals stretching through Monday

• Beginning Oct. 1, the same situation will be extended to the westbound entrance/exit ramps, again at one- to two-hours stretches through Oct. 5.

Resurfacing is one of the final steps in the mammoth repair project. During that span all four lanes of the I-90 were ripped out and replaced, ramps were revitalized and bridges refurbished between Conneaut Creek and the Pennsylvania line. Another encouraging sign that the end is near: new guardrails have been erected, highway signs have been re-installed and grass seed has been spread.

Preliminary work began in 2011 and is scheduled to finish completely by “late fall” of this year, according to ODOT bulletins. Brent Kovacs, ODOT District 4 spokesman, said recent reports from project managers indicate the summer’s rain and hot, steamy spells haven’t affected the timetable and work should wrap up on time.

Crews must apply a top coat of asphalt on all four freeway lanes before closing the books on the Conneaut project, Kovacs said.
