Ashtabula bank robbed

Knife-wielding, counter-jumping, man dressed in black flees on foot

ASHTABULA — A man wielding a knife and jumping on the bank counter robbed a downtown bank Friday morning, police said.

A black male, wearing a black hoodie, black pants and sneakers, demanded money from the tellers at the U.S. Bank, 4717 Park Ave., shortly before 10:08 a.m., Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said.

The suspect was armed with a knife and his face was partially obstructed, he said.

The man fled on foot and headed west, Stell said.

No one was injured.

He got away with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Shortly thereafter, bank officials taped a sign to the front door stating the bank was “temporarily closed,” and they did not know when the bank would reopen.

Ashtabula police immediately began searching the area for the suspect.

Acting on a tip, police and the FBI descended on a house at about 1 p.m. in the 500 block of West 46th Street.

Neighbor Kim Onion said she saw three men running down the street.

“It’s ridiculous,” she said. “(The police chasing suspects) is a weekly occasion around here.”

Police did not take anyone into custody and continued searching for the suspect late Friday afternoon.

At 2:05 p.m., U.S. Bank employees went home for the day.

Anyone with information on the bank robbery should call the Ashtabula Police Department at 440-992-7172.
