ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Criminal charges are pending in the case of a 9-month-old boy, found bruised “head to toe” and eventually hospitalized, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.

The baby was transferred to Ashtabula County Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with bleeding on the brain, deputies said. Authorities expect to charge the boy’s 24-year-old mother and her 22-year-old boyfriend, who has a Conneaut address, in Ashtabula Municipal Court, with endangering children.

Deputies were dispatched to an assault complaint at the Edgewood Trailer Park in Ashtabula Township on the morning of April 16. They were met by investigators with the Ashtabula County Children Services Board.

Inside an address deputies found the baby, wearing only a diaper, and covered in bruises, a report states. Some bruises were older, including one in the shape of a hand found on the child’s buttocks, deputies said.

Children Services employees told deputies they had removed some of the woman’s children from the address in the past because of living conditions. The agency had a concern with the boyfriend because of suspicions he used drugs.

The mother denied striking her child and told deputies she never saw the boyfriend hit the boy. The woman recently left the baby in the man’s care, and when she returned home noticed the bruises, she told deputies. When the woman asked what happened, the man told her the child fell off a couch and struck a toy with his face, deputies said.

The woman said she didn’t report the injuries out of fear her children would be taken away. In addition to the baby, another small child was removed from the address, deputies said.

The man was wanted on warrants issued through the sheriff’s office, deputies said.
