Madison teen dies in crash

OHP says Amanda Kamposek died instantly

THOMPSON TOWNSHIP — A Madison High School student was killed Tuesday morning in a car versus cement truck crash on Route 528.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Andrew Topp of the Chardon Post said Amanda L. Kamposek, 17, was killed when she failed to yield at a stop sign at Moseley Road and Route 528 at 8:12 a.m.

Her 2002 Chevy Cavalier was crushed by an southbound Mack cement truck.

Topp said Route 528 was closed for nearly six hours as emergency crews worked to free Kamposek and then clean up the wreckage at the border of the Geauga -Lake County line.

Brian E. Shank, 61, of Painesville, was driving the cement truck for RW Sidley Inc. He suffered “non-life threatening injuries” in the crash, Topp reports, and was taken to the Madison Emergency Center on Route 20 in Madison Township for treatment.

OHP crash reports show Kamposek failed to yield at a stop sign on Moseley Road and attempted to cross Route 528 when the cement truck struck her driver’s side door.

The force of the crash forced both vehicles off the road, Topp said.

“There was no overturning of the vehicles and no one was ejected,” he said. “There was no intoxicated suspect on the part of either driver, there were no signs of impairment or speed violation. This was just a clear case of failure to yield.”

Topp said Kamposek was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kamposek was wearing her seat belt. Shank was not wearing his.

Topp said troopers are still investigating why Kamposek was at the intersection so early in the morning, noting that her parents said she had the spent the night at a friend’s house and was possibly on her way to school.

“At this time, we are not sure where (Kamposek) was going,” he said. “We are still investigating that part. We are assuming she was headed to (Madison High School), but we are still trying to figure that out.”
