Soap Box Derby ready to roll Saturday at The Arts on Bridge Street

ASHTABULA — The cars have been built, the signs have been hung and the racers are ready.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the After School Discovery Program’s Soap Box Derby will take place on Bridge Street, kicking off The Arts on Bridge Street (TABS). The day will be filled with many events, including an art show and many art activities for children.

The Children’s Art Village, a collaborated effort of the After School Discovery Program and the TABS Committee, will be located on the waterfront. That’s where After School Discovery will be  assisting the children with chalking (on the sidewalks) and making book markers.

The children also will have the opportunity to place their shoed footprint on a ceramic square that will be fired and displayed at the newly renovated Walnut Beach pavilion.

Hand prints of paint (Hands on the Harbor) will be offered to young and adult participants. The walls will be located in the Children’s Art Village.  Paint will be placed on the hand and a hand print will be placed on one of three walls.  These walls also will hang in the renovated pavilion at the beach.

Attendees should look in the Children’s Art Village at 12:15 p.m., when Hilda Jarvis, one of Ashtabula’s newest authors will be reading parts of her new book, “What I Dreamed Last Night.”

At 2 p.m., children’s author and poet, Tanya Pilumeli, will be reading excepts from her book, “The Dragon Fly Keeper.”

The readings will be followed with acoustic guitar classical music performed by Julia Mansfield at 3:30 p.m. Mansfield graduated from Baldwin Wallace College in May of this year.
