‘Bula mulls police levy

ASHTABULA — The city appears headed for a police levy on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Based on action at the City Council safety forces committee Friday, it will take the form of a five-year, 2.5-mill tax — with all money generated earmarked for police protection.

City Council will hold a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. today to discuss and vote on the levy. The meeting will be in the second floor conference room of the Municipal Building, 4717 Main Ave.

Legislation pertaining to natural gas rates also will be discussed.

City Manager Jim Timonere said he recommended the police levy, which will generate about $530,000.

The owner of a home valued at $75,000 will pay an additional $66 a year; on a $50,000 house it would be $44 per year.

The average home value in the city is between these two figures, Timonere said.

Ward 1 Councilman Rick Balog, who also chairs the safety forces committee, said the money will be spent directly for the operation of the Ashtabula Police Department, or the payment of salaries of permanent or part-time police, communications, or administrative personnel at the rate of 2.5-mills per year, which amounts to 25-cents per $100 of valuation, for a period of five years.
