Trick-or-treat is today for many area kids

Thanks to Superstorm Sandy, plenty of children in Ashtabula County will enjoy a rare treat — Halloween goodies in November.

Several communities, worried about the impacts of the storm, postponed their trick-or-treat observances to this weekend. Most will be held this afternoon.

Here’s the revised lineup, devised from notices given the Star Beacon:

• Today — Ashtabula (4 to 6 p.m.), Ashtabula Township (4-6 p.m.), Conneaut (5-7 p.m.), Kingsville Township (6-8 p.m.), North Kingsville (4-6 p.m.), Monroe Township (5-7 p.m.), Plymouth Township (4-6 p.m.) and Saybrook Township (4-6 p.m.)

• Sunday — Madison Township (6-8 p.m.)

Mindful of the rescheduled events, many Halloween displays are still in place at houses and businesses. In Conneaut, Randy Skalos’ award-winning “Haunt on Williams Street,” with its many animated exhibits, will be open this evening, he said.

Skalos said he was surprised his outdoor display escaped harm from this week’s heavy winds and rain. “Nothing was damaged,” he said.

In North Kingsville, the village will also conduct its annual “Trunk-or-Treat” event at the municipal building parking lot during trick-or-treat. Residents who have candy to share, but don’t get visitors because their house is difficult to reach, can come to the municipal building on Route 20 to distribute sweets. Vehicles may be decorated in the spirit of the season, Mayor Terry McConnell has said.

Today’s weather forecast is a lot calmer: The National Weather Service foresees a 40 percent chance of rain, with high temperatures in mid-40s that will fall into the low 30s this evening.

Several communities — such as Geneva, Geneva-on-the-Lake and Orwell — held their trick-or-treat hours last weekend. Andover held their observance on Wednesday, a spokesperson said.
