Citizen helps Conneaut police find mobile meth lab

CONNEAUT — A Conneaut woman faces drug charges after an eagle-eyed resident saw her hide two duffel bags that contained a methamphetamine-making laboratory Thursday night, police said.

Charges are pending against the woman, according to a spokeswoman in the law director’s office. Police had not forwarded a report to the office for review by early Friday afternoon.

The incident began around 9:45 p.m., when a resident spotted a woman carrying two bags running along Harbor Street, police said in a report. The woman appeared to be “fleeing from someone,” officers said. The resident then saw the woman stash the bags near a house in the 400 block of Harbor Street, police said. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the remains of a meth lab.

Also in one of the bags was a woman’s purse that held other meth-making ingredients — and identification of the purse owner. The woman was located by police a short time later at a traffic stop, according to a report.

Initially, the woman denied any involvement, but then told police her purse must have inadvertently fallen into the bag. She had no answer when asked if meth-making items also fell into her purse, officers said. The woman, who was “obviously lying under questioning,” was arrested, police said.

The lab was disassembled by the department’s meth technician and taken to the police station for destruction, according to a report.
