Apologetic gunman surprises Windsor Township homeowner

JEFFERSON — A Windsor Township woman returned home Tuesday morning to find a strange vehicle in her driveway and a strange man emerging from her house with a bag of loot in one hand and a pistol in the other, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.

But rather than threaten the woman with the weapon, the man apologized profusely before she fled the scene, deputies said.

Thanks to the license plate number the woman provided, deputies were able to quickly locate the suspect at a nearby house, according to a report.

Around 9:15 a.m., deputies were contacted by a Noble Road woman who had just come home to find a vehicle in her driveway. The woman provided the dispatcher with the vehicle’s license plate number, according to a report.

After making the call, a man emerged through the front door carrying a bag and a handgun. The man immediately approached the woman, who was still seated in her vehicle, and asked her if he was at her house. The man told her an accomplice was still in the house and then apologized repeatedly. He made no threats and did not point the pistol, deputies said.

The woman drove away, and out of the corner of her eye saw the mystery vehicle also leave, heading north on Noble Road, deputies said.

Upon responding to the scene, deputies found the semi-automatic pistol on the ground near the house. The gun is owned by the woman’s husband, deputies learned.

Using the license number, deputies were able to locate the suspect at a nearby Windsor-Mechanicsville Road house. The man told deputies he and a friend picked out the house at random, and the friend tossed a brick through a window to gain entry. The accomplice then filled a bag with merchandise, according to a report.

The man, who told deputies he has a drug addiction, led authorities to the bag, which was buried in a wooded area beneath leaves and branches.
