Spring-like weather gone in a gust

Ashtabula County’s flirtation with spring-like weather ended with a thud on Thursday, and it may be several days before temperatures break the freezing mark, according to the National Weather Service.

A lake effect snow warning continues today, with an extra half-foot of snow possible before Saturday arrives. Meanwhile, the strong winds that buffeted the region Thursday will continue, making temperatures in the 20s feel more like a below-zero climate, the NWS says.

The story Thursday was powerful winds that rocked the region. Gusts approached 40 mph, but no widespread power outages were reported by FirstEnergy as of late Thursday afternoon, according to the utility’s website. Less than five outages were known to FirstEnergy, and they all seemed centered around the Geneva area, according to the website. A tree fell onto a house in Geneva along Route 84.

Gusts did create white-out conditions that hampered visibility across the county. Thursday’s sudden plummet in temperatures from the high 50-degree range enjoyed Wednesday created icy conditions that made driving a challenge. No widespread traffic accidents were reported by safety departments.

Temperatures aren’t expected to creep above 30 degrees until Thursday, although snow is expected to taper off over the weekend, the NWS reports.
