ODOT to begin final leg of Interstate 90 overhaul

CONNEAUT — Traffic on two Conneaut roads will be re-routed away from Interstate 90 overpasses starting soon, a sign work is ready to resume on the highway’s $46 million makeover.

Beginning Monday, Furnace Road beneath I-90 will be closed to traffic through late August, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. One week later, on April 22, vehicles won’t be allowed to travel under I-90 on South Ridge Road for the same length of time, the agency announced Tuesday.

The road closures are designed to keep vehicles out of harm’s way while work is done to the bridges.

The restrictions are a sign work is ready to resume and wrap up a $44.6 million overhaul of the freeway between Conneaut Creek and the Pennsylvania line. Last year, I-90’s westbound lanes were ripped out down to the dirt and replaced with new material. Now it’s the eastbound lanes’ turn, Justin Chesnic, ODOT District 4 spokesman in Akron.

“We’re planning soon to flip the traffic,” Chesnic said Tuesday.

During construction, both lanes of eastbound traffics will be funneled across the median and join the two lanes of westbound traffic, Chesnic said. “It gives the contractor full access to the eastbound lanes,” he said.

The lane switch is scheduled to start Thursday, according to an ODOT statement.

Sometime in late summer, a final layer of asphalt will be applied to all lanes, Chesnic said. Work on the freeway is expected to wrap up sometime in October, officials have said. The entire project is on schedule, Chesnic said.
