‘Every Little Step: Baby & Toddler Safety Day’ scheduled

ASHTABULA — Tomorrow Ashtabula County Children’s Services and University Hospitals are teaming up to present “Every Little Step: Baby & Toddler Safety Day.”

The event aimed at helping parents keep their children safe and healthy will take place at Ashtabula Walmart from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Children’s Services, University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center, Ashtabula County and City Health Departments and Walmart will collaborate to offer a variety of fun, informational programs throughout the day.

Peggy Ducro of the Ashtabula City Health Department said Public Health nurses will be distributing “OH Baby” kits for new Ohio families. These informational kits are designed to get families off to a good start. “They contain information on safe sleep practices for your baby, feeding your infant, development guides, immunization information, oral health, and a growth chart to hang on the wall,” she said.

The nurses will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will also be giving away books and outlet covers, as well as newborn onesies that read “This Side Up” to remind parents to put babies to sleep on their backs.

A lactation consultant will also be available to advise breastfeeding moms. The Walmart photo department will be available to take 5x7 photos of babies and toddlers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the bakery will raffle off two toddler birthday cakes at the end of the event.

There will also be a diaper-changing contest from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to shop for baby and toddler items to donate, or to make a cash donation to benefit the following agencies: Ashtabula County Children’s Services; Community Action WIC program; Community Action Home Visiting program; Ashtabula County Board of Developmental Disabilities Help Me Grow Early Intervention; and Ashtabula County Head Start/ Early Head Start.

A wish list of items the agencies need will be available at Walmart.
