‘Bowl for Kids’ Sake kicks off at Sonny Lanes

HARPERSFIELD — Members of the community and other supporters laced-up their bowling shoes and headed to Sonny Lanes Bowling Alley Sunday evening to “Bowl for Kids’ Sake.”

The Big Brothers & Big Sisters (BBBS) fundraiser takes place nationwide for the whole month of March in various locations. Sunday’s event was the 33rd annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake event held by BBBS of Northeast Ohio, and it was this year’s kick off event said Mark Ruth, Director of Resource Development.

“The teams who came out today are loyal supporters, and we would like to grow that base of support,” he said. This is the first year they have had a lot of online fundraising, he said. “Our constituents can use a personalized website to tell their story about how Big Brothers & Big Sisters changed their lives, in the hope that it will encourage people to donate.”

Ruth said he would like to see more BBBS involvement within Ashtabula County because there is a lot of apparent need. “We see the Ashtabula market as very important because there are a lot of under-supported children,” he said. “We have recommitted resources to the Ashtabula area because there is still more need.”

BBBS of Northeast Ohio is hosting events across Ashtabula, Geauga, and Lake counties at various bowling alleys. “Last year we had about 450 supporters which represented a pretty nice increase for us and this year we added a fourth event. So that tells you we’ve continued to grow,” Ruth said.

He said the main supporters of BBBS of Northeast Ohio are Fairmont Minerals, TEC, Inc., News Herald, Great Lakes Mall, Cleveland Dairy Queens, the Ashtabula Foundation, and many others.

Executive Director Tim Kehres said, “We’ve been at Sonny Lanes for a decent number of years now, and they’ve been great, so we’re happy to host the event here. We have a great bunch of people here today, including people from the News Herald and Grand River Cellars. They’re big supporters of ours.”

Upcoming Bowl for Kids’ Sake events will be in Chardon, Wickliffe and Fairport.
