Firefighter injured, dog and cat die

ASHTABULA — City firefighters are being called heroes after they saved a woman trapped in a burning house on West 29th Street Wednesday morning.

When firefighters arrived at 507 W. 29th St., shortly after 8 a.m., they saw heavy smoke pouring from the second-story window, fire on the first floor and a report of a woman trapped inside the home.

Firefighters immediately entered the house to conduct a search and rescue, according to the report.

They rescued the trapped victim.

“She was in a second-floor bedroom,” said Ashtabula Fire Chief Ron Pristera. “She was rescued by the firefighters.”

Community Care Ambulance transported the woman to Ashtabula County Medical Center, which is just several blocks from the home.

The woman’s name and condition were unknown, Pristera said.

With the help of Community Care Ambulance, firefighters also rescued and revived two dogs. Both were taken to a veterinarian.

Another dog and a cat died in the fire, reports show.

A firefighter was injured in the blaze, reports show.

An engine from Ashtabula Township Fire Department, two engines and an aerial from Ashtabula Fire Department, for a total of 16 firefighters, responded to the call.

Ashtabula Fire Marshal Ron Deemer is investigating the origin of the fire.
