Deputies use TASER to subdue Wal-Mart shopper in Ashtabula Township

JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies used a TASER device in the aisles of a local Wal-Mart to subdue a Rome woman who was avoiding possible arrest early Tuesday morning, according to a report.

The 30-year-old Ketchum Road resident faces a handful of charges from her behavior in the Ashtabula Township store and later at the county jail, where she reportedly fought with a corrections officer.

Deputies were sent to the store around 3:49 a.m. after a manager called to report a woman who was harassing customers and store employees. The woman had been in the store for five hours, milling about, and had refused numerous requests to leave. The woman demanded to see documentation requiring her to leave, according to a report.

The woman told a deputy she was shopping for her children and was waiting for her ride home. Store personnel told deputies she had given them the same story.

While the deputy was still talking to the woman, she began to walk away. Told to return, the woman screamed that deputies had tried to arrest her before and it wasn’t going to happen again, according to a report. She then kicked off her shoes and began to run down an aisle.

A deputy gave chase, telling the woman to stop or he would use his non-lethal TASER device. The woman kept running, the deputy fired the TASER and the woman fell to the floor, according to a report.

Emergency medical personnel were called to check the woman, who suffered a slight laceration upon striking the floor, deputies said. The woman was taken to jail, but refused to enter a cell. During a tussle with a corrections officer, the officer suffered scratches to her arms, according to a report.

Assault on a corrections officer is a felony offense, deputies said.
