Landfill one step closer to expansion

GENEVA — The expansion of a Geneva area landfill is one step closer to reality after a public hearing Thursday evening.

Only one person provided oral testimony during the short hearing that is part of a process which seeks public input on the proposed expansion of the landfill.  The expansion would include 69.7 acres of lateral expansion and an increase of capacity of 14.6 million cubic yards.

Kristopher Weiss, of the Public Interest Center, opened and closed the event and area resident Richard Pruden gave the only oral testimony regarding the site.

Weiss said the public comment portion of the process concludes on April 5. He said people may send written comments to Ohio EPA, Division of Materials and Waste Management, Information Resources Management Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus OH, 43216-1049.

Comments regarding the proposed expansion may also be emailed to brian.dearth@epa.ohio.gov, Weiss said.

“The permit, if issued, as a final permit, authorizes a lateral and vertical expansion at the Geneva Landfill (facility on Tuttle Road in Geneva Township),” according to a written public notice distributed at the hearing at the Northwest Ambulance District.

Weiss said the permit process has not specific timetable. He said anyone may appeal the eventual decision which will be heard by the Environmental Appeal Review Committee.

A Franklin County Common Pleas Court and the Ohio Supreme Court are the final two aribitrars of permit appeal, Weiss said.

Weiss said 22 people attended a hearing last June involving the expansion and a similar number attended Thursday evening.
