City to host Tire Amnesty Day June 1

ASHTABULA — The city will host Tire Amnesty Day on June 1 to help residents get rid of scrap tires, City Manager Jim Timonere said at Monday’s City Council meeting.

The tire amnesty grant program, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling and Littering Prevention, helps Ohio’s local governments develop programs to promote sustainable scrap tire collection drives, sponsor tire drop-off efforts and engage in targeted clean up events, he said.

Mary Church, project administrator in the newly formed Department of Planning and Community Development, wrote the grant and secured the money for the Sanitation Department.

The city received $10,000 to remove scrap tires, Timonere said.

City residents can bring up to 10 passenger tires and dispose of them for free from 8 a.m. to 2  p.m. June 1 at the city’s transfer station at 501 W. 24th St.

Citizens must bring proof of residency with an driver’s license, identity card or utility bill bearing their city address. Additional tires can be disposed of at a cost of $3 per tire without a rim, and $5 per tire with a rim.

The transfer station will be open for any bulk items residents would like to bring in. Normal dumping charges will apply.

In other business:

n Council approved the city manager’s request for an ordinance to enter into an agreement with GPD Group of Youngstown for the purpose of providing design and construction engineering services for the west harbor sanitary sewer improvement project;

n Timonere re-appointed Betty Jackson and Dominic Volpone as members of the Ashtabula Metropolitan Housing Authority, and

n Timonere re-appointed Arlene Kernekilian as a member of the Housing Appeals Board.
