Conneaut’s school board honors employees, retirees

CONNEAUT — Several Conneaut teachers and a handful of retirees received accolades at Wednesday night’s Conneaut Board of Education meeting.

The May meeting has traditionally been reserved for handing out awards and recognition to Conneaut Area City Schools district employees. Five received special honors, including:

• Mirando Award (for elementary-grade educators) — Mike Kenyon (Gateway Elementary School); Linda Dell (Lakeshore Primary School)

• Bev Wadley Award (for classified employees) — Martha Gross, nurse’s aide at Gateway Elementary

• Lisa Iarocci Award (for an employee who displayed courage in the face of adversity) — Amy Light, third-grade teacher

• 110 Percent Award (for efforts above and beyond) — Pam Glenn, secretary, Lakeshore Primary

Several employees who have or will retire were also recognized at the meeting, including: Leslie Kallio (38 years with the district), second-grade teacher; Linda Dell (35 years), first-grade teacher; Liz Vento (34 years), health/physical education teacher; Beth Carlisle (31 years), computer technology teacher; Robert Starkey (28 years), science teacher; Laureen Bidwell (19 years), bus driver; Linda Bernay (17 years), administrator; Marv Simpson (15 years), custodian; Linda Walford (15 years), speech/language pathologist; John Roskovics (14 years), administrator

In other business, the board learned bids to make repairs to a section of roof and a smokestack at Conneaut High School and a boiler conversion at Conneaut Middle School could be $100,000 less than expected. The latter project would remove electric boilers at the school in favor or less-costly natural gas devices.

The quotes will be forwarded to Brewer Garrett, a mechanical engineering company that handled an energy-efficiency upgrade for the district, for analysis and review, members were told.
