Ashtabula native nominated for Daytime Emmy

Freddie Smith was thrilled to hear of his nomination for a Daytime Emmy for his role on “Days of Our Lives.”

Smith, a 2006 Edgewood High School graduate who plays Sonny Kirakis on the popular soap opera, is up for Outstanding Younger Actor. It’s his first Daytime Emmy nomination.

“I woke up at 7 a.m., looked at my phone and saw ‘missed call, missed call,’” he said. “I had message after message, saying congratulations. I said, ‘Oh my God! I’ve been nominated for an Emmy!’”

The Emmy awards show will be televised at 8 p.m. June 16 on the Home Living Network.

Smith left Ashtabula seven years ago to go to Los Angeles and pursue his dream of making it big in the entertainment business. He got the job on the daytime soap opera in the summer of 2011.

“We film a lot; an episode every day,” Smith said during a phone interview from his California home Monday morning. “It keeps me busy. It’s a lot of fun. I like it. It’s great.”

Smith also is working on a new project called “Addicts Anonymous,” a comedy showing the lighter side of addiction, he said.

“(On the show) the addiction classes are taught by a lovable idiot,” he said.

Smith writes and produces the show, and fellow actor, Shawn Christian of “Days of Our Lives,” is the executive producer. Christian will star in the show, too.

Fans can find out more about “Addicts Anonymous” at www.kickstarter.com and searching “Addicts Anonymous.”

TV viewers were introduced to Smith in 2010 on the Valentine’s Day episode of “90210” on the CW Network (WBNX Channel 55) in which Smith played soccer player Marco. He also appeared on “The Medium,” in the independent comedy “One Wish,” in the short film “Weak Species” and in four national commercials.

Smith took acting classes in Cleveland before heading to California.

He said he likes the West Coast.

“It seems more and more like home every day,” he said.

His parents, Renee and Fred Smith of Ashtabula, say they enjoy flying to the West Coast to visit Freddie.

He always comes home for Christmas, his mother said.
