Repo man ambushed by man

JEFFERSON —  Charges are pending against a Saybrook Township man who early Saturday morning ambushed another man he knew was coming to repossess a vehicle, sheriff deputies said.

When the repo man arrived, the suspect jumped out from behind bushes and inflicted heavy damage to the repo man’s vehicle with a long, metal pipe, deputies said. Some of the blows showered the driver with window glass and just missed striking him, the report states. The attacker faces numerous charges, including felonious assault.

The incident was reported shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday at a home on Center Road in Saybrook Township. The 43-year-old suspect told deputies he caught a man trespassing on his property.

The repo man, working for a collection company, gave a different story, deputies said: He had contacted the suspect earlier that evening, telling him he had to haul away his vehicle. The suspect said he understood, the victim told deputies.

A short time later, the repo man pulled into the suspect’s driveway. The suspect, apparently awaiting his arrival, jumped out from a hiding spot and began swinging a pipe at the vehicle, damaging windows, the hood, door and fender. The victim was not struck by the pipe, but told deputies there were some near-misses.

When deputies told the suspect the repo man’s version of events, he admitted inviting the victim to the property, deputies said.
