A 24-year-old man was hospitalized late Friday evening after he was wounded in a shooting on West 43rd Street, said Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell.
“The victim is presently a patient at Ashtabula County Medical Center,” Stell said. The shooting occurred just after 6 p.m. in the 900 block of West 43rd Street, he said.
Stell said he could not comment on the nature or severity of the man’s wounds.
Yellow police tape marked off an area between 939 W. 43rd Street and several houses to the east. Multiple police officers from the Ashtabula Police Department roamed the street in search of evidence after the shooting, while others watched the crime scene with high-powered guns.
Ashtabula police officers also were looking for evidence along West 41st Street and in several yards that connect the two streets.
“We don’t have anyone in custody,” Stell said. He said the victim was struck multiple times in an outdoor area along the 900 block of West 43rd Street.
Stell said he could not comment on any suspects at this time. He said the shooting was under investigation.
“We have contacted the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for their assistance,” Stell said. He said BCI would be asked to help process the area where the shooting occurred.
Neighbors stood in doorways watching from a distance, while others talked with officers on the scene.
