Feds, Ohio hospital settle HIV discrimination case

A northeast Ohio hospital accused of discrimination by refusing to allow someone with HIV into an alcohol treatment program will pay more than $32,000 in a settlement.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Cleveland says Glenbeigh Hospital in Rock Creek violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by refusing someone admission because of side effects from his medication for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The office says investigators found the specialty hospital couldn’t prove treating the patient would have directly threatened others’ health or safety.

The settlement requires Glenbeigh to pay about $32,000 to the complainant and $5,000 in civil penalties. It also must create an anti-discrimination policy and train employees about the ADA.

Glenbeigh said it welcomes people for treatment “regardless of their disability” and that its intention is to provide “the highest quality compassionate care” for patients.
