Provisional votes still to be counted

JEFFERSON — One vote still to be counted could decide the fate of a five-year, 1.9-mill additional road/bridge levy in Colebrook Township.

Ninety-six provisional ballots will be added to the votes already cast in Tuesday’s primary election, and one of them hails from Colebrook, said Duane Feher, Ashtabula County Board of Elections director. “It may or may not impact the outcome,” he said Wednesday.

When totals were tabulated Tuesday night, the Colebrook issue wound up in a 67-67 tie, according to unofficial results.

Generally, provisional ballots are those cast outside the voter’s designated precinct. The election board has already authorized workers to begin verifying the eligibility of the voter. Final approval of the provisionals will come at a board meeting still to be scheduled. There’s also a chance late-arriving absentee ballots could add to the total. Ballots must be postmarked before Election Day and must arrive by May 16.

Twenty-three percent of Ashtabula County’s nearly 61,000 registered voters participated in the election. That’s typical for a primary, which average between 20 and 30 percent turnout, Feher said. Some 14,207 votes were cast, and 52 percent were from Democrats — not surprising given the contested races in that party for county commissioner and three seats on the county Common Pleas Court. Forty-one percent of the voters were cast by Republicans, who picked candidates for county commissioner and Congress.

Final results were tabulated around 9:22 p.m., less than two hours after polls closed, Feher said. He credited poll workers and staff for an election that was relatively glitch-free.

“They did a great job,” he said.
