Former Lakeside High School wrestling coach pleads ‘not guilty’

Jerry Brady faces two counts of contributing to delinquency of minor

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Former Lakeside High School Varsity Wrestling Coach Jerry Brady pleaded “not guilty” to two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in Ashtabula County Juvenile Court Tuesday.

Brady is accused of standing by as a 17-year-old wrestler assaulted a 16-year-old student outside Lakeside Junior High School on Jan. 21.

The fight, captured on the school’s security camera, started over a wrestling bag.

Brady was placed on paid administrative leave while the Ashtabula Area City School District conducted an internal investigation and eventually fired from his coaching position on Feb. 10.

Judge Charles Hague said if Brady is found guilty, or pleads guilty to the charges, he could face six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for each of the charges.

Hague said the contributing to the delinquency of a minor charge is one of a few charges that involve an adult that the legislation sees fit to give jurisdiction to Common Pleas Juvenile Court.

Assistant Ashtabula County Prosecutor Tamara Wetherholt asked that a $5,000 personal recognizance bond be set, $2,500 for each count.

“We’re not seeking a large amount,” she said. “We don’t feel Mr. Brady is a flight risk.”

Wetherholt also asked that a no contact order be issued for the victim of the assault.

Brady’s attorney, Gary Pasqualone, said he and his client did not have a problem with the bond as long as it was a personal recognizance bond.

“My client is a lifelong resident of Ashtabula County and operates a very lucrative business,” he said. “He’s not going anywhere.”

Hague said he didn’t see any reason for the case to be treated any differently than other cases of its kind and set a personal recognizance bond of $2,000, $1,000 for each count. Brady is also to have no contact with the victim of the juvenile assault.
