Schools to explain the FAFSA to college-bound seniors

As the second half of the school year begins, high schools are working to prepare college-bound seniors for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Edgewood High School will host its annual FAFSA parent meeting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Principal Karl Williamson said there is typically a meeting in the fall explaining the basics of financial aid, and then in January they conduct the FAFSA meeting.

“This FAFSA meeting is incredibly crucial to all parents and their children considering attending college. Information shared at this meeting includes the process for completing the FAFSA paper work, what information is necessary to complete the FAFSA paper work, as well as the myths behind FAFSA,” he said.

“Most folks do not know that the FAFSA paper work can be completed without having the exact information from the W-2 Tax form,” Williamson said. “Sometimes people wait too long to complete their FAFSA forms and this often times causes their child to receive less financial aid.”

He said last year’s meeting had more people than available seats, and the meeting will be held either in the school library or the inner cafeteria, depending on turnout.

Representatives from Kent State Ashtabula and Lakeland Community College will present, as well as Edgewood’s ACCESS liaison, Nicole Steele.

Jefferson Area High School Principal Jeremy Huber said they have already held one FAFSA meeting in December.

Guidance Counselor Lisa Newhart and ACCESS Advisor Mark Richards have held annual FAFSA meetings together for parents and students.

The U.S. Department of Education currently features several articles to de-mystify and explain the FAFSA, including a summary of the filing process in just six steps.
