Geneva City Council closer to finding replacement for Keenan

GENEVA — City Council is a step closer to finding a replacement for former city councilman, Michael Keenan.

Keenan resigned in April after moving to Harpersfield Township. City council members must be residents of Geneva.

Seven people have applied for the postion. City Council will hold a public meeting July 22 at 5:30 p.m. to whittle down the number of candidates.

City Councilman Howard Anderson said it might not be easy to come to a conclusion that night.

“These candidates are all excellent and could bring something to council,” Anderson said. “It is a very impressive group of people and all seem well-qualified to hold the position.”

Anderson said the list consists of three women and four men. Two of the applicants are former council members.

“It’s good to find some women interested in this position,” Anderson said. “There is some healthy diversity in the applications.”

The applicants include William Buskirk, an insurance representative and former Geneva councilman; Susan Hagan, an electrician; Dixie Hamilton, a retired teacher; Mary Ann Hannah, a retired teacher; Elias Nunez Jr., an insurance representative; Robert Rosebrugh, a former Geneva councilman and RFD delivery person; and James Weber, a retired employee of ATC in Geneva.

In other council news, the city is a step closer to opening Pairings, Ohio’s Wine and Culinary Experience. A resolution was passed authorizing a lease agreement with Pairings. The city will lease the land it owns on the corner of Park and South Eagle streets to Pairings. The land is located on the former site of the old Geneva Elementary School.

Pairings is expected to begin building on the almost 3-acre parcel in the fall. Windows on Pairings, a 3400 square foot preview of the wine and culinary facility, should open later in the fall and feature culinary classes, and wine pairings and innovations.
