Musician returns to Ashtabula for clinic

ASHTABULA — After spending six weeks in China, Denmark and Italy, Neil Zaza was happy  to return to Ashtabula to share his guitar knowledge with budding local musicians.

Zaza, an instrumental guitarist, travels the world entertaining and has made numerous albums and instructional materials.

“I was in China for two weeks, Denmark for two weeks and Italy for two weeks,” he said.

Zaza said he was happy to return to Morrell Music store in Ashtabula for the second time in two years.

Zaza played some music for a crowd of about 20 people in the store and provided some real-life tips on playing the guitar. “Kind of give some tips and plan on what I think people should focus on,” he said.

The instrumental music scene is alive and well in Europe and Asia, Zaza said.

Zaza connected with Mark Bovee, owner of the store, several years ago and has brought him to the store twice in the last two years.

An annual Christmas concert at the Hanna Theater in Cleveland is next on the performance agenda for the performer who has been playing the guitar for more than a quarter century.

The year 2013 will include more touring and a live concert DVD in Denmark if all goes as planned, Zaza said. “I think I may start working on an album. This past summer all I did was ride my bike,” he said with a laugh.

Zaza has performed with a variety of well-known musicians including Dweezil Zappa, Eric Carmen and Michael Stanley. He is a graduate of Nordonia High School and attended the University of Akron where he studied classical guitar.
