Jefferson Police Chief Steve Febel to retire Dec. 23

JEFFERSON — Village Police Chief Steve Febel has given notice, effective Dec. 23, that he will be retiring as chief in order to concentrate on the “three Fs:” “Family, friends, and fishing,” he said. “I just plan on relaxing.”

His retirement, officially accepted by Jefferson Village City Council Monday evening during its regular meeting, was something Febel deliberated on for some time.

“It was hard. I’ve been doing this for 33 years,” he said. “I’ve had a great career, I’ve enjoyed it. I’m leaving the village in very capable hands.”

He said that he will most miss the five full-time and 19 part-time officers who make up his department, as well as the citizens he has grown to know over the past decades.

That said, Febel will still be actively involved in the department as a part-time officer. He said he will be involved in tactical and firearms education.

“I’ll be able to put in a little more time training the officers,” he said.

Febel will also work part-time for Ashtabula City Police Department, providing security at Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Another constant in Febel’s routine will be the care of his canine partner of six years, Fred.

“He stays with me, he’s my partner, he’s part of the family,” Febel said.

Police chief in the village since 1991, Febel began his career as an officer in Jefferson. He said he has seen significant change take place in both the village and in the police department during his tenure. He said he feels calls have gotten a little more dangerous and that traffic has increased in Jefferson, but that the pride his department has in its work has remained the same as when he started. Febel said that he feels there have been many highlights during his years at the department.

“We’ve brought in computers, new cruisers. And there are a bunch of new things going on, too many to name,” he said.
