ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP —
A Lorain man banned from Walmart stores across the country because of theft complaints was caught trying to sneak hundreds of dollars of merchandise from the Ashtabula Township store Saturday night, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.
The 32-year-old man, intercepted at the exit doors, fought violently with security personnel and other employees before he was subdued, deputies said. A $3,000 electronic device erected at the door to detect stolen items was broken during the struggle, according to a report.
Deputies said the man faces robbery, theft, vandalism, criminal trespassing and drug possession charges.
The incident occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m., deputies said. The man’s pockets were stuffed so full with items his clothing had to be cut with a knife to take inventory, deputies said. He was found to be carrying 18 DVDs and two video game controllers, according to a report. Pills and marijuana were also in his clothing, deputies said.
Store personnel said the man had been in the store on two previous occasions within the past two weeks. He has been banned from the department stores because of previous theft offenses, deputies said.
