ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Aspen Dental and GameStop from the mall soon will be moving into a new plaza along the Route 20 corridor, according to the Ashtabula County Building Department.

Construction began in January for the two-tenant building going up across from the Burger King in front of Ashtabula Towne Square mall.

The work is expected to be done by the end of May.

Aspen Dental is a network of dental care providers offering a range of dental services, including exams, cleanings, fillings, oral surgery, whitening and crown and bridge work.

GameStop, a video game retailer, is just the latest of many stores leaving the mall. Two weeks ago, Kitchen Collection announced it will shut its doors at the end of May, following Christopher & Banks, Fashion Bug, Payless ShoeSource and Sears, which have all vacated the mall in the past year.

Last week, Family Dollar closed its store on State Road and opened a new, larger store on a 7.5-acre site on Route 20, adjacent to Corlew Field and across the street from Community First Credit Union.

Under the terms of the new county/city/township sewer district agreement, a joint economic development district (JEDD) was created to accommodate the new development.

The county owns the sewer lines in the township and the city owns the wastewater treatment plant. Under the sewer district agreement, employee wages and the profits from businesses in the JEDD will be subject to the city’s 1.8 percent income tax.

The revenue will be shared between the city and township after deductions are made for JEDD administration and capital improvements to the treatment plant.
