Retirement center hosts pooch benefit

ASHTABULA — His long tongue lolling in the hot August sun, Patrick the cairn terrier squinted and looked for some shade.

He didn’t have to look too hard or too long, because owner Avery Rohm, 3, was looking for some relief from the heat, too.

“We are both hot,” Avery said, “and Patrick licks my face.”

Dogs of all shapes and colors brought their owners to the K9 Extravaganza at the Country Club Retirement Center III Sunday afternoon. The event, which was filled with games and raffles, raised money for the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League and the Abused, Neglected Needy Animals (ANNA) shelter in Erie.

“Today was a lot of fun,” event organizer and director of the CCRC Life Enrichment Center Sandy Rill said. “We like to do events to bring the public in to see the facility, but also to do some good in the community.”

Rill brought her Jack Russell terrier, Buster, for the festivities, which included bobbing for wiffle balls, dog agility demonstrations and other games. Every dog won a prize, including a doggie competition judged by CCRC resident Marge Hallgren.

“We even did a doggie makeover,” she said.

Sydney Rohm, 7, brought her very tall greyhound, Nate, to the event.

“I love Nate,” Sydney said. “He runs really fast and I can’t catch him.”

Dad Harry Rohm said the family support the APL as often as they can and tries to stop at the shelter’s site at the Ashtabula Towne Square regularly.

ANNA spokesdog Nick the chow-chow, who was rescued by the shelter in 2004, was also in attendance. Nick’s story of survival after he was hit by a truck, left for dead, and found blind, frostbitten, starving and in need of a hind leg amputation helped ANNA build its animal shelter, owner Jeanne Onuska said. Onuska is the marketing director for CCRC.

“What volunteers and shelter workers do for the animals is amazing,” Onuska said.
