Geneva farmers market is now open for business

GENEVA — Dozens of people gathered at the Pairings Wine and Culinary Center Saturday morning to celebrate the opening of Terra Local Farmers Market.

“We decided to do an aggregate market because we have farmers who were (asking for it). It gives them another outlet (for their product),” said Erica Hadlock who is coordinating the venture with Loretta Todd.

After a blessing and a ribbon-cutting ceremony customers roamed a tent filled with a variety of items ranging from corn products ground on a traditional stone mill to locally bottled maple syrup,” Hadlock said.

She said all the items to be sold at the market will be from within 100 miles with many grown right here in Ashtabula County. “All of our produce is coming from local farms,” she said of a tighter range of 50 miles including many Ashtabula County growers.

The market will include a variety of growers and producers, but the items will be sold through a single check-out area instead of each individual grower making individual transactions.

The market will be open for business, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday until Oct. 26, Hadlock said.

Customers will also be treated to cooking demonstrations. “Every week we are going to try and have a local chef prepare dishes from ingredients available at the market,” she said.

Jamie Cordova, of Spire Institute, and Lisa Delgado, a local caterer, provided the first cooking demonstrations.

Hadlock said the goal will be to have at least 80 percent of the recipe available at the market.

Lisa Linehan, of Harpersfield Township, said she knows the organizers and was excited about attending the opening. “We were just chomping at the bit,” she said.

She said it was time for a farmers market in Geneva after Ashtabula, Ashtabula Harbor and Madison opened farmers market.

Paul and Tammy Wright, of Geneva, were one of the first in line to purchase items. “We like it. We think it is great,” Paul Wright said.

“We’ve been looking forward to it,” Tammy Wright Said.
