Jefferson BOE takes care of several big issues

JEFFERSON — The Jefferson Area Local School District’s Board of Education at its Tuesday meeting honored outgoing superintendent, Doug Hladek, and hired interim superintendent who will eventually become the superintendent.

Hladek is retiring at the end of this month and beginning July  1, John Montanaro will become interim superintendent on a per diem basis until July 31. He will assume full-time superintendent duties on Aug. 1, with a two-year contract and a salary of $93,000 per year. As interim superintendent, Montanaro will receive $357.69 per day for up to 15 day. Montanaro was formerly principal of Jefferson High School.

The board named  Jeremy Huber Jefferson High’s new principal effective Aug. 1. Formerly assistant principal there, Huber has been given a three-year contract. His salary will be $86,785 per year.

The board also recalled five Jefferson Elementary School teachers from Reduction in Force (RIF) layoffs. They will return to work with limited one-year contracts for the 2013-14 school year. The teachers include: Cindy Locy and Casey Shatto for Grade 1, Megan Beckwith for Grade 3, Amanda Somppi for Grade 4 and Laura Sullivan for Kindergarten.

Hladek said these teachers are returning because there were 10 retirements and one resignation over the last year, leaving the district short-handed.

“These teachers served as tutors before last year and were given the opportunity to return,” Hladek said.

Hladek is retiring after seven years with the Jefferson Area Local School District. Before that he was assistant superintendent of Ashtabula Area City Schools for 28 years. He is retiring after 35 years in local education. Hladek’s retirement takes place as of July 30.

“This county cares about kids and education,” Hladek said. “It was a pleasure to serve in the county as long as I did.”

Jefferson Board of Education President Patricia Inman said Hladek will be missed and wished him the best.
