Motorcycle run to benefit Geauga County veterans

— On June 30, Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClelland, Midge (the world’s smallest police dog), and the Sheriff’s deputies on an escorted motorcycle ride through the county while helping the Veterans’ Housing Fund, a joint project of the Burton-Middlefield Rotary (BMR), and Geauga Habitat for Humanity.

The newly formed Veterans’ Housing Fund will provide home improvements for Geauga County veterans, including wheelchair ramps, handicap-accessibility for bathrooms, home efficiency upgrades and more.  Burton-Middlefield Rotary will raise funds to provide the materials, and Geauga Habitat for Humanity will provide the labor. This is the eighth annual BMR Rotary Ride for veterans. Past rides helped raise funds for the County Veterans’ Memorial.

The $25 registration fee per motorcycle includes pancakes and coffee served at the registration area at the Geauga County Fairgrounds (14373 N Cheshire St., in Burton).  Registration is from 8 a.m. until the ride kicks off from the Fairgrounds, at 10 a.m.  Riders can pre-register at www.BMRMotorcycleRun.com.

Those who pre-register will receive a gift.  The registration fee also includes a picnic lunch at the fairgrounds after the ride. The ride will be 50 to 60 miles.

A variety of event sponsorships are available. Sponsors’ names will appear on signs at the fairgrounds, and sponsors will be announced at the event. Visit the event website for information on becoming a sponsor.

The ride will include a drive-by of the Veteran’s Memorial on Ravenwood Drive and  pass through some of the most beautiful and scenic areas of the county.

For a $20 fee, riders will receive a commemorative DVD that will include photos of riders with their bikes taken by Marty Pesek.  The event registration form includes a space to order the DVD, which will be set to patriotic music.

The Rotary invites veterans in need of home improvements to explain their situation and submit requests to Burton-Middlefield Rotary Ride, P.O. Box 516, Burton, Ohio 44021. Family and friends may also nominate veterans in need.  A panel of representatives from Burton-Middlefield Rotary and Geauga Habitat for Humanity will select those most in need of help from the Veterans’ Housing Fund.
