Three-man argument in Geneva sends one to hospital

GENEVA — A homeless man staying in Geneva was arrested Wednesday evening after he punched a man in the face, starting a three-man fight that ended in an ambulance ride to the hospital.

Geneva Police Sgt. Joseph Webb arrived at the house at 852 S. Broadway to find “people running around and yelling, and three males with blood on their faces and arms,” he said.

Suspect Allen Jewett, 44, was considered “the most injured,” Webb reported.

Webb quickly calmed the situation, pulling Jewett’s wife aside to ask what happened. The wife told Webb she had paid for a ride to Geneva to pick up her juvenile sons and her truck, which is considered “community property.”

“She said her husband came out of the house yelling and they began shoving each other,” Webb said. “She said Jewett then tried to let the air out of the truck tires.”

The wife’s driver, who was sitting in the front seat of his vehicle, became the focus of the argument as Jewett allegedly punched the 20-year-old Ashtabula man in the eye, temporarily incapacitating him, police reports show. But Jewett was quickly and physically overcome by the driver’s friend, who started wrestling with Jewett.

“When (the driver) was able, he joined in and all parties wrestled on the ground. Punches were thrown and Jewett got the worst of it,” Webb said.

Jewett was transported to Geneva Medical Center by ambulance, Webb said, where he admitted to throwing the first punch of the fight. His 6-year-old son also confirmed Jewett was the aggressor in the situation, Webb said.

Jewett suffered a dislocated shoulder and cuts and bruises in the fight, police reports show.

Webb said Jewett was cited for assault because he threw the first punch. He was cited at the hospital and released on his own signature, police reports show.
