Dog shot, injured in Geneva

GENEVA — A 15-year-old Geneva girl said she witnessed a man shoot her dog last week, and now the family is stuck with a $357 vet bill and a dog with a BB lodged in its neck.

Lindsey Mayle said she was alarmed when she heard her 3-year-old blue tick beagle, named CoCo, “squeal.” CoCo was tied to the tree in the Mayles’ West Main Street backyard.

Mom Deborah Mayle said her daughter, who has been distraught over the incident, saw a man kneeling down with a BB gun.

“She shouted at him, but he just stood up and walked (away),” Deborah Mayle said. “So my daughter called the police.”

While the Mayles say they know who shot CoCo, the suspect has not been charged with shooting an animal or discharging a firearm within city limits, Western County Court records show.

“We are very frustrated and very angry,” Deborah Mayle said. “My daughter saw this man shoot her dog and there is a pellet in the dog’s neck — so put two and two together.”

The Mayles took CoCo, who suffers from seizures, to an emergency veterinary center in Mentor over the weekend, where x-rays show the lodged pellet in the dog’s neck and shoulder area. Medications, cleaning of the wound and diagnostics cost the family $357, Mayle said, but it also cost them peace of mind.

Anyone with information about the shooting of the Mayles’ dog should call the Geneva Police Department at 466-1111.
