Geneva councilman moves, city must fill vacant position

GENEVA — Geneva Councilman Michael Keenan has moved out of the city limits and is no longer eligible to serve on the city’s board of directors, Geneva City Manager Jim Pearson confirmed Friday.

“It was his decision to make an address move, which put him outside the city,” Pearson said. “That, unfortunately, makes him ineligible to continue on council.”

Keenan’s address change means Council will have to appoint its new member, and applications for the position will be accepted until June 30.

Any Geneva resident interested in assuming Keenan’s seat for the remainder of his term, which expires in Dec. 2015, should write a letter of interest, Pearson said.

“Council just wants to see who is interested, schedule some interviews, that sort of thing,” Pearson said. “We have to get the ball rolling.”

Letters of interest, which should include a short biography and statement of intent and interest, can be sent to: Phyllis Dunlap, Clerk of Council, 44 North Forest Street, Geneva, Ohio 44041.

“That short biography and just what a person thinks they can bring to the seat will help Council make an educated decision,” Pearson said.

While not common, the city has had a number of suddenly vacant council seats over the last few years, he said.

“Appointments have happened many times over the years for many reasons,” he said. “We are always hopeful to have plenty of candidates to choose from, plenty of interested people.”

Pearson said he is sorry to see Keenan go.

“Anyone who picks up public service and helps Geneva move foreword as a city is a special sort of person,” he said. “Michael was a good councilman who wanted to see Geneva move forward. He had a commitment to that, and we hate to see him go.”
