‘Lights of Love’ creator honored with ornament

CONNEAUT — “Lights of Love,” an annual fundraiser for the Conneaut Area Chamber of Commerce, will have a bittersweet glow this holiday season.

This year’s “Lights” will be the first without its founder, Sarah Schenck, who died in July at age 85. Schenck was a local businesswoman when she launched the event in 1982, according to her obituary.

To commemorate her involvement in the program, a limited edition ornament will be available in her memory this year. The ornament is $20 and available by special order at the Chamber of Commerce office, Main and Washington streets.

Local attorney Sally Richards suggested the commemorative ornament idea.

“Sarah worked so hard for Conneaut and loved this community so much,” Richards said in a statement. “Since she is the one who started the Lights of Love tradition, it seemed only fitting that we remember her in this manner. The special glass ornament helps depict the global nature of Sarah’s efforts in promoting Conneaut and helping others in their business and personal endeavors.”

Wendy DuBey, Chamber executive director, agreed.

“When Sally approached the Chamber with the idea of offering an ornament in memory of Sarah Schenck, the Chamber didn’t hesitate,” she said in a statement. “Although Sarah is no longer with us, her legacy remains.”

The program gives people the opportunity to honor or remember a friend or relative via a symbolic light that will shine from a tree on the grounds of Conneaut Savings Bank, 305 Main St. A ceremony to illuminate the tree will be held Nov. 29, immediately following the city Christmas parade.

Cost is $5 and includes a tree ornament and mention in a special page to be published by the Star Beacon.

“Lights” can be purchased at the Chamber office, 235 Main St.; Andover Bank; Conneaut Savings Bank; Key Bank and Port Conneaut Federal Credit Union. Students at Lakeshore Primary and Gateway Elementary schools can earn $1 for their schools for every “Light” sold.

For more information, contact the Chamber at 593-2402.
