Conneaut residents with frozen lines can get water from city plant

CONNEAUT — Residents dealing with frozen water lines may get water directly from the Lake Road treatment plant, City Manager Tim Eggleston said Thursday.

Non-stop days of subfreezing temperatures are taking a toll on water lines, prompting an emergency in some neighborhoods, Eggleston said. People on King Street have reported interrupted water service, as well as other locations across town, he said.

“It’s not rampant, maybe a handful,” he said.

Still, there’s enough concern that the water plant is throwing open its doors to people with jugs and containers that will be filled at no charge.

“An indication that your water line may be freezing is a loss of water pressure and/or low water flow,” Eggleston said in a statement. “If this is the case, you may want to consider letting a faucet drip so the water flow is maintained, as moving water does not freeze.”

The prolonged freeze has driven frost deeper into the earth than normal, Eggleston said. “(City crews), in some areas, have encountered frost three feet down,” he said in the statement.

Warmer weather is in next week’s forecast, but it may not prove a permanent remedy, Eggleston said. “Unfortunately, if the weather starts to warm up and then goes back to subzero temperatures, it will only drive the frost deeper and cause more problems,” he said in the statement.

People experiencing water problems are asked to contact the water distribution office and provide their name and address so work crews can pinpoint problem neighborhoods, Eggleston said.

In the meantime, city crews are dealing with numerous water main breaks resulting from the cold. Nearly a half-dozen have occurred in recent days, Eggleston said.
